The Chairman of Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area, Mr. Lanre Sanusi, says the ongoing rehabilitation of 23 Road in FESTAC Town, Lagos, will be completed within four weeks.
Sanusi gave the assurance during the groundbreaking ceremony for the road project on Thursday in Lagos.
He described the road as vital to commercial activities in the area, adding that its completion would ease movement and boost economic activities.
“This road is very important; it’s a major commercial route, and most of the transport vehicles pass through this access,” he said.
The chairman explained that the project was a continuation of works initiated by the previous administration, noting that the original contractor had been recalled to complete it.
“Based on my discussion with the contractor, we expect that this project will be completed within the next four weeks,” he said.
During an inspection of the market and residential areas along 23 Road, Sanusi expressed concern over environmental violations by roadside traders and residents.
He noted that many traders had erected kiosks along the road, under high-tension lines, and on drainage channels, blocking water flow during rainfall.
“They are risking their lives under the high-tension lines, and whenever it rains, the entire road becomes flooded because the drains are blocked,” he said.
Sanusi said the council was considering alternative solutions, including providing standardized, branded kiosks for traders.
“We want to accommodate them, but in a safer and more organized location. We are considering providing container shops painted in the council’s colors for only FESTAC or Amuwo Odofin residents,” he said.
The chairman also mentioned other ongoing projects in the area, including rehabilitation works at Jakande Estate, as well as palliative repairs on Second Avenue and 52 Junction.
Clarifying reports on the recent demolition on Sixth Avenue in FESTAC, Sanusi said the council was not involved in the exercise.
“I want to put it on record that the buildings demolished on Sixth Avenue had nothing to do with the local government. The Federal Housing Authority carried out that operation,” he said.
He urged the FHA to work closely with the council in future to ensure proper stakeholder engagement before such actions are taken.
Sanusi reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to restoring the safety, cleanliness, and glory of FESTAC Town.
