The Oyo State Government has issued a two-week ultimatum to roadside traders and those operating in container shops along Airport Road, Old Ife Road, and Onipepeye areas of Ibadan to relocate their businesses.
The directive was contained in a statement issued in Ibadan on Tuesday by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Seyi Makinde, Dr. Suleimon Olanrewaju.
According to the statement, the government warned that it would no longer tolerate roadside trading or the placement of container shops on drainages, having provided markets and other enclosed trading spaces across the city.
It explained that roadside trading exposes traders to serious dangers and environmental hazards, adding that the government has a responsibility to protect the lives and property of its citizens.
The government further noted that trading on walkways damages public infrastructure, blocks drainage channels, and increases the risk of flooding.
It also said that such practices undermine the state’s investments in tourism promotion, as unsightly roadside trading discourages visitors and investors.
The statement directed all affected traders to comply with the relocation order before the October 27 deadline, warning that failure to do so would lead to enforcement actions in line with existing state laws.
The government said such enforcement could include the confiscation of goods and the prosecution of offenders.
It urged residents to cooperate with the directive, noting that adherence would promote cleanliness, safety, and sustainable development across the state.
