The Federal Government has launched the Nigerian Farmers Soil Health Scheme (NFSHS) to improve farmers’ understanding of soil management for enhanced productivity, better-quality produce, and increased income.
Speaking at the unveiling on Tuesday in Abuja, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Aliyu Abdullahi, said the initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda for food security.
Abdullahi explained that the NFSHS is designed to promote sustainable land use, climate-smart agriculture, and regenerative farming practices across the country.
He said the scheme would revolutionize how farmers manage soil health by providing real-time insights into soil conditions, enabling them to boost yields, reduce costs, and adopt smarter farming methods.
“The objectives include assessing soil health status, ensuring proper fertilizer use, promoting regenerative farming, enhancing food security, and enabling data-driven insights,” he stated.
According to the minister, the scheme’s benefits include higher crop yields, improved produce quality, sustainable land use, efficient input utilization, and more informed agricultural policy decisions.
“The NFSHS provides information on what nutrients the soil has, what it lacks, and how to treat it right,” Abdullahi added.
He noted that the initiative goes beyond science, as it aims to empower farmers with the tools and knowledge needed for long-term success.
“When a farmer understands their soil, they can plan better, harvest better, and pass on healthier land to their children. When we care for the soil, the soil cares for us. And when farmers are informed, they can thrive,” he said.
Abdullahi described the launch as “the beginning of a new season”, where every Nigerian farmer can cultivate with knowledge, confidence, and peace of mind under a renewed hope for national prosperity.
