The North-East Governors’ Forum (NEGF) has raised concerns over the soaring cost of agricultural inputs, warning that it could trigger a food crisis in 2026 if not addressed.
In a communiqué issued at the end of its 12th meeting in Jalingo, chaired by Gov. Babagana Zulum of Borno, the forum urged the Federal Government to provide more subsidies for farmers and ensure adequate preparations for dry-season farming.
While acknowledging progress in the fight against insurgency, the governors noted that the region still faces serious humanitarian and infrastructural challenges. They also expressed concern over climate risks, especially impending floods, and called for proactive measures, including sensitisation of communities living along flood plains.
The forum appealed for urgent support from the Federal Government and the North East Development Commission (NEDC) to rebuild damaged infrastructure, particularly bridges.
It also announced that the North-East Trade Fair will hold in Maiduguri in December 2025, in collaboration with partner organisations.
On power supply, the governors tasked their Power and Energy Committee to design a subregional integrated master plan, with solar energy identified as a priority option.
The NEGF comprises the governors of Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba and Yobe states.
