China has donated one million dollars to Nigeria to support victims of the recent floods that ravaged several states.

The grant was formalised on Wednesday in Abuja during the signing of exchange notes between the Chinese government and Nigeria’s Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning.

Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, said the gesture reflects China’s solidarity with Nigeria during a difficult period.

“In times of difficulty, China and Nigeria always stand together,” he said, noting that China itself has also suffered severe flooding in recent months. He added that the support underscores China’s confidence in Nigeria’s resilience and ability to recover.

Yu highlighted the growing partnership between the two countries, pointing to progress in trade, investment, and people-to-people exchanges. He recalled that President Xi Jinping recently announced zero-tariff treatment on 400 tariff lines for African countries, including Nigeria, a move he said would boost Nigerian exports and jobs.

Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Atiku Bagudu, described the donation as timely, stressing that it would complement ongoing government relief efforts in the worst-hit states.

He assured that the funds would be managed transparently under a framework developed with relevant agencies, with monitoring and evaluation jointly carried out with the Chinese Embassy.

“This gesture is not only an act of goodwill but also a testimony to the deepening cooperation between our two nations in trade, infrastructure, technology, agriculture, and now, disaster relief,” Bagudu said.

He conveyed Nigeria’s appreciation to China, describing the donation as a reflection of the long-standing friendship between both countries.
