Sokoto, July 27, 2025 – The Sokoto State Government has rolled out 30 new mass transit buses to boost inter-state and intra-city transportation, as part of ongoing efforts to improve mobility and ease the burden on commuters across the state.
The Deputy Governor, Idris Muhammed Gobir, officially handed over the vehicles to the State Ministry of Transportation on Saturday, emphasizing that the deployment was aimed at addressing the challenges passengers face in accessing public transport.
Gobir explained that the buses were part of a fleet previously procured by the state government but withheld pending the completion of a new electronic ticketing system. With the system now operational, he said passengers can book and pay for rides online with ease.
“The e-ticketing system will also ensure transparency and accountability in the day-to-day operation of the state’s mass transit service and guarantee value for money,” the Deputy Governor stated.
He urged the Ministry of Transportation to prioritize the upkeep and monitoring of the new buses, stressing that the vehicles were acquired with taxpayers’ money and must be protected accordingly.
“I want to call on both drivers and passengers to keep these vehicles clean at all times,” he added.
In his remarks, the Commissioner for Transportation, Bala Kokani, commended Governor Ahmed Aliyu for his unwavering commitment to the transportation sector. He pledged that the ministry would maintain the vehicles properly to ensure longevity and sustained service delivery.
“We will protect these vehicles just as we protect our personal property,” Kokani assured.
Since the inception of the Governor Ahmed Aliyu-led administration, a total of 70 mass transit vehicles—including 50 buses and 20 Toyota Camrys—have been procured to strengthen the state’s transportation network.
The initiative is one of several measures aimed at cushioning the effects of fuel subsidy removal and improving living standards in Sokoto State.
