As part of efforts to ensure transparency and equitable access to subsidized fertilizer for the 2025 wet season, Governor Ahmad Aliyu of Sokoto State has appointed Local Government Area (LGA) Coordinators and inaugurated a Supervisory Committee to oversee the distribution and sale of fertilizer across the 23 LGAs in the state.
The initiative is aimed at preventing diversion, ensuring fair distribution, and supporting farmers across the 244 political wards. Each coordinator is tasked with supervising the allocation and sales within their respective local governments, while the newly established committee will provide oversight to guarantee adherence to state guidelines.
Prominent individuals from various sectors have been named as coordinators. They include Amb. Abubakar Shehu Wurno for Sokoto North, Prof. Bello Bada for Sokoto South, Prof. M.A. Maishanu for Kware, and Prof. Mustapha Namakka for Gudu, among others. Each coordinator is expected to work closely with the supervisory committee to ensure that the fertilizer reaches the intended beneficiaries.
The Supervisory Committee comprises Directors of Administration and Social Development of each LGA, representatives from the Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, members of the LG Elders Committees, District Heads, and representatives of religious, women, and youth groups. Also included are officers from security agencies such as the Police, DSS, Civil Defence, and LGA Directors of Agriculture who will serve as secretaries.
According to the government, the committee is mandated to coordinate the distribution process, ensure that all wards receive their allotted quantities, enforce the sale of fertilizer at approved prices only, and maintain transparency throughout the exercise.
Governor Aliyu emphasized that the measure was introduced to address previous challenges in fertilizer distribution and to strengthen food production and security in the state. He urged the coordinators and committee members to discharge their duties diligently and in the best interest of the farmers.
The fertilizer sales and distribution are expected to commence shortly as part of the state’s broader agricultural support programme.
