A Nigerian businesswoman, Agbeluyi Folasade, has asked President Bola Tinubu to make building a top-quality hospital in Nigeria one of his main goals.
She made this request at a time when it is very clear that Nigeria needs better healthcare services and facilities.
In an open letter to President Tinubu on Tuesday, Folasade said there is an urgent need to improve the healthcare system so it can meet the needs of both government leaders and ordinary citizens.
She explained that Nigeria badly needs a world-class hospital with modern equipment, which could reduce the country’s dependence on foreign hospitals.
Folasade believes that such a hospital would raise the standard of medical care in Nigeria and help people trust local hospitals more.
She also said that a world-class hospital could attract skilled doctors from around the world, helping local medical professionals learn and improve through working together.
She added that it would make more Nigerians feel confident in the local healthcare system, and fewer people would need to travel abroad for treatment.
Besides improving health services, Folasade said this kind of hospital would boost the economy by creating many jobs in the healthcare field and saving money that would otherwise be spent overseas.
Folasade mentioned that she has always tried to help Nigerians through charity work and successful businesses both in Nigeria and internationally.
To fully fix the healthcare system, she said the government should focus on several important areas through well-planned projects.
First, she said it is important to invest in hospitals and technology. This means fixing old hospitals and building new ones with up-to-date medical equipment.
She also suggested using electronic health records to keep track of patient information more easily, reduce mistakes, and improve service. Telemedicine can help people in remote areas get the care they need.
Next, she talked about the importance of training and hiring more healthcare workers. This includes offering more medical education and encouraging doctors to specialist in important fields.
She said regular training for medical workers would help them stay informed about new medical developments.
Folasade also said better working conditions and good salaries can help keep skilled workers in the country.
Lastly, she said that improving how healthcare is paid for is key. A system that gives all Nigerians access to healthcare without causing financial stress should be created.
She suggested exploring different ways to fund healthcare—like public-private partnerships and community health insurance—and said that managing money in a clear and honest way would help get the most out of resources.
