The Nigerian Government has unveiled a new National Energy Master Plan to sub-national entities, urging state governments to increase investment in the electricity sector in order to improve access and promote efficiency.
In a statement issued by the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), the Kogi State Government expressed interest in leveraging the new policy document to catalyse investment in the power sector.
The new Master Plan provides, among other elements, a framework for the implementation of a nationwide solarisation programme. It aims to help Nigeria achieve 30,000 megawatts of power generation from off-grid renewable sources, and to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles as an alternative to fossil fuels.
During a visit to the ECN by the Governor of Kogi State, Ahmed Usman Ododo, the Commission’s Director General, Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, described the engagement as a demonstration of commitment to strengthening partnerships for the broad implementation of the new plan.
The National Master Plan, developed by the Energy Commission of Nigeria, was recently approved by the Federal Executive Council as Nigeria’s official energy transition action plan.
