Some people living in the Baban Gwari area of Fagge Local Government in Kano State are asking the state government to speed up the clearing of drainage systems to help prevent flooding now that the rainy season has started.
Several residents told reporters that their area is known to flood easily, so quick action is needed.
One of the residents, Habu Abba, said they have struggled with floods for many years, especially near the Katsina Road roundabout.
“Flooding happens every rainy season, especially in July, August, and September. We’re asking the government to move faster with the drainage work they recently started so we won’t suffer again this year,” he said.
Another resident, Anthony Bitrus, who lives near the roundabout, said the area always floods and that the government needs to take it more seriously.
“People here are always worried during the rainy season because past governments didn’t do much. We hope this new administration will do better, especially since they’ve started drainage work in our area,” he said.
Abdullahi Musa, a resident of Rijiyar Zaki, also shared his concerns. He fears their area might flood too because there are few drainage systems, and the ones that exist are being used as garbage dumps.
“If nothing is done, we might face serious flooding. People are throwing trash into the drains, and that’s blocking the water flow. The government needs to act fast to stop a disaster,” he warned.
The Public Relations Officer for the Ministry, Murtala Shehu, told reporters that the government started its yearly drainage clearing last Friday at the Baban Gwari roundabout, which is known to flood badly.
He said this action is meant to stop repeated flooding and help keep the environment safe before heavy rains begin.
This isn’t just another routine project. It shows we’re serious about protecting the environment and preparing the city. We want to make sure our drainage systems are ready and working before the rains come,” he said, quoting the commissioner.
The Baban Gwari roundabout and Katsina Road have long been known for flooding, which causes problems for residents’ health, safety, and ability to move around.
