The United Support for Science and Mathematics Project (UNSSM-Project), a Non-Governmental Organisation, has called on the Federal Government to increase investment in Science and Mathematics education as a catalyst for national development.

Speaking during the organisation’s Innovators Day programme held at Coronation Preparatory Academy in Kuje Area Council, FCT, Abuja, UNSSM Project Facilitator, Mr Kelvin Veakpe, emphasised the need to demystify mathematics and inspire innovation through strategic mentorship and competitions.

During the event, 104 students from across schools in the FCT were honoured as Mathematics Ambassadors. Veakpe said the initiative aims to identify and nurture young talents, while fostering a culture that embraces STEM—Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

“The government should focus more on sciences because life itself revolves around scientific principles,” Veakpe said. “Some of the challenges we’re facing today stem from a lack of scientific thinking and analytical skills. This is why programmes like ours should receive government backing.”

He noted that the UNSSM Project evaluates students through school-based tests and inter-school competitions, with top performers earning rewards including N2.5 million and other prizes. Selected ambassadors also qualify for a six-week free summer ICT training covering skills like coding, robotics, artificial intelligence, and web design.

“We celebrate our ambassadors in front of their peers and parents during Innovators Day. This public recognition motivates both the learners and others to do more,” he added.

Coronation Preparatory Academy’s head, Mr James Arlloo, echoed the call for government support, noting that no nation could thrive without science and technology. He urged both government and private sector stakeholders to provide adequate tools to aid the teaching and learning of STEM subjects in schools.

One of the honorees, Grade 3 pupil Omolola Olorunfemi, expressed excitement over her recognition and pledged to put more effort into her studies, particularly Mathematics.

A parent, Mrs Agnes Udoh, also shared her joy and affirmed her commitment to supporting her daughter’s academic journey. She encouraged other parents to help their children embrace Mathematics and science-related subjects.

UNSSM Project continues to champion Science and Mathematics education in Nigeria, using competitions, mentorship, and innovation-focused programmes to ignite curiosity and foster critical thinking among young learners.
