Residents of Mokwa town in Niger State have continued to wallow in their grief and devastation following a deadly overnight flood that ravaged two communities—Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa—leaving dozens dead, many missing, and scores of homes destroyed.
The flood, attributed to a torrential downpour that lasted several hours, had claimed over 80 lives according to reports.
It also swept away more than 50 residential houses along with their occupants.
As of Wednesday morning, emergency officials from the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), working with Mokwa local government authorities, local divers, and brave volunteers, had recovered 21 bodies.
A statement issued by NSEMA in Niger state noted that three survivors comprising a woman and her two children are currently receiving treatment at Mokwa General Hospital for injuries received during the incident and trauma.
Commenting on the devastating incident, the Chairman of Mokwa Local Government, Jibrin Muregi narrated a moving account of a mother and her last-born child who were stranded on a pile of debris and rescued against all odds.
“In the midst of the chaos, a woman and her last-born child, who were stranded on top of debris swept away by the flood, have been rescued. We thank God for their safety,” Muregi said.
Muregi noted that the flood victims were in dire need of aid from the government and other relevant agencies.
“We urgently call on the government and all relevant agencies to come to our aid, as this disaster is far beyond the capacity of the local community to manage alone. We also appeal for immediate relief materials and compensation for the individuals and families who have been affected.”
