Zamfara State is taking major steps to improve child welfare and rebuild critical social systems through a new partnership with the Federal University of Gusau (FUGUS) and UNICEF.www.zamfarastate.gov.ng

The agreement, sealed with a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), aims to strengthen the state’s social service workforce and tackle the rising challenges of child malnutrition. The initiative comes at a crucial time, as many communities continue to face barriers to healthcare, food security, and professional social support.
As part of the agreement, FUGUS will spearhead the training and accreditation of social workers, ensuring that qualified professionals are equipped to serve across the state. A high-level strategic meeting hosted by the university’s Vice Chancellor resulted in key action points, including:
A detailed workplan for implementing the MoU,
Formation of a coordination structure,
Drafting of Terms of Reference (ToR),
A state-wide social audit of social workers, and
Plans to adapt and accredit diploma and certificate programs in social work.
The meeting was attended by top officials, including the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Permanent Secretary for Local Government, and university leaders, all united by a common goal: to deliver stronger support systems for Zamfara’s most vulnerable.
In a related development, Governor Dr. Dauda Lawal launched the Zamfara State Food and Nutrition Policy and commissioned a new Nutrition Warehouse. The facility, supported by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), is expected to improve the management and distribution of food supplies across the state.
Speaking at the launch, Governor Lawal reaffirmed his administration’s focus on child nutrition and maternal health. He announced a ₦500 million counterpart contribution to the Child Nutrition Fund (CNF) and expressed willingness to support legislation granting six months of maternity leave for working mothers.
“These initiatives reflect our commitment to build a healthier and more resilient Zamfara,” the governor said.
With coordinated action, targeted investment, and a renewed focus on human development, Zamfara is laying the groundwork for a future where children and families can thrive.
