The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) has called for inclusive and supportive workplaces for everyone, including People Living with HIV.
The Director-General of NACA, Dr Temitope Ilori made this known in a statement in Abuja in commemoration of the 2025 International Workers’ Day.
Workers’ Day is celebrated to highlight the labor Force’s contribution globally and serves as a reminder of the challenges and demands for better working conditions, equitable wages and social justice to contribute to development.
Ilori said as the world celebrates the contributions of workers, there is need to reaffirm commitment to building inclusive and supportive work environments that respect the rights of all, regardless of health status.
“Workplaces are not just centres of productivity; they are communities where dignity and equality must be upheld,” she said.
She urged employers, labour unions, and government institutions to prioritise HIV awareness, promote education and enforce non-discrimination policies in the workplace.
According to her, Nigeria has nearly two million people living with HIV, many of whom are active contributors in the labour force.
“These individuals face not only health-related challenges but also the stigma and discrimination that come with their status,” she said.
Ilori stressed that no one should be denied employment, dignity, or opportunity because of their HIV status.
“As we continue to work towards safe and fair workplaces, let us remember that health rights are fundamental human rights,” she added.
She called on all stakeholders to work together to ensure that every worker is treated with respect, fairness and care, irrespective of their HIV status.
