The Nigerian Red Cross Society, Sokoto branch, on Friday took to the streets to raise awareness about the importance of breastfeeding among local families.

The sensitization program, which was held in the Sokoto metropolis with the theme “Save Humanity Sensitization and Awareness Campaign 2025,” featured health talks from various healthcare professionals.

Organized by the Mother’s Club in collaboration with the Health Department of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, the campaign was aimed at creating awareness on the significant role breastfeeding plays in the health and development of infants.

Speaking with our reporter, the Health and Care Adviser to the Red Cross Society of Nigeria, Sokoto branch, Abdurahaman Iya, urged families to exclusively breastfeed their babies for the first six months.

He emphasized that research has shown breast milk contains all the essential nutrients required for a child’s healthy growth and development.

Additionally, he said that the practice strengthens an infant’s immune system, reducing the risk of infections and chronic diseases.

“Breastfeeding lowers the chances of cancer in mothers and helps prevent other health-related conditions,” Iya added.

He noted that while the benefits of breastfeeding are well-documented, many mothers still face challenges due to limited awareness and information.

The awareness campaign, he said will therefore help to create a supportive environment where breastfeeding is embraced as the primary source of nutrition for infants,

In her remarks, the Red Cross State Mother’s Club Coordinator, Sokoto branch, Amina Aliyu expressed her appreciation for the large turnout of women at the sensitization program.

She noted that if mothers apply the advice given during the program, it will significantly help protect children from diseases and contribute to their overall health and well-being.

Furthermore, she lauded the efforts of the Red Cross in promoting such crucial health initiatives in the state.
