The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to prioritising cancer care by expanding infrastructure and treatment centres across the country.
Dr. Iziaq Salako, Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, made this known during a visit to the Federal Medical Centre, Ebute-Meta, Lagos, ahead of the 2025 World Cancer Day.
Salako highlighted the government’s efforts, including the establishment of the Cancer Health Fund, an intervention programme designed to support cancer patients financially.
He noted that President Bola Tinubu has directed the expansion of cancer treatment facilities and infrastructure to improve healthcare delivery.
“We have the Cancer Health Fund, which is an intervention fund provided by the federal government to support patients diagnosed with cancer,” Salako said.
Additionally, he mentioned the introduction of a Catastrophic Health Fund, specifically designed to assist patients with kidney-related ailments. This initiative has significantly reduced dialysis costs from ₦50,000 to ₦12,000 per session.
The minister also emphasized the importance of public awareness and preventive measures. World Cancer Day, observed annually on February 4, aims to promote early detection and treatment. The 2025 theme, “United by Unique,” underscores the need for a patient-centred approach to its care.
To enhance medical access, the government has approved the establishment of new federal medical centres and additional medical schools across the country.
Salako reiterated that these efforts align with the government’s broader agenda to improve Nigeria’s healthcare system, making its treatment more accessible and affordable for citizens.
