The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed deep regret following the announcement by the United States of America regarding its intention to withdraw from the organization.
In a statement issued on Monday, the organization emphasized its vital role in safeguarding global health and security, which includes protecting Americans by addressing the root causes of diseases, strengthening health systems, and coordinating responses to health emergencies, including disease outbreaks in challenging and high-risk regions.
“The United States was a founding member of WHO in 1948 and has actively shaped and governed its work alongside 193 other Member States,” the statement highlighted. Over the past seven decades, the collaboration between WHO and the United States has been instrumental in achieving major public health milestones.
“Together, we eradicated smallpox and brought polio to the brink of eradication. American institutions have both contributed to and benefited from their membership in WHO,” the organization said.
WHO underscored that its partnership with the United States has saved countless lives worldwide, including those of Americans, by tackling global health threats collaboratively.
Acknowledging the importance of continuous improvement, WHO stated that with the participation of the United States and other member nations, it has undertaken the most extensive reforms in its history over the past seven years.
“These reforms were designed to enhance accountability, cost-effectiveness, and impact across countries,” WHO noted, adding that these efforts are ongoing and crucial for improving global health outcomes.
WHO expressed hope that the United States would reconsider its decision, emphasizing the importance of continued collaboration for the health and well-being of millions around the world.
“We look forward to engaging in constructive dialogue to maintain and strengthen the partnership between the USA and WHO. The global health challenges we face today require solidarity, not division,” the statement read.
The organization reaffirmed its commitment to working with all member states to address pressing health issues, from disease eradication to pandemic preparedness and response, while continuing to uphold its mandate of serving the world’s most vulnerable populations.
This announcement from WHO comes at a time when global health systems are under pressure from a range of crises, highlighting the significance of coordinated international efforts in addressing such challenges.
