The National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) has announced proactive steps to prevent the entry and spread of a new variant of the COVID-19 virus known as XEC, which has been detected in several countries.
The agency’s spokesperson, Gloria Ogbaki, confirmed that while Nigeria has not recorded any cases of the variant, measures are already in place to detect and manage it should it attempt to enter the country.
In a statement released on Monday, NBMA emphasized its commitment to safeguarding public health by working closely with other health stakeholders to monitor the situation.
“The XEC variant has not been detected in Nigeria, and we are taking all necessary precautions to prevent its entry and spread,” Ogbaki said.
The agency has ramped up surveillance at major points of entry, including borders and airports, to promptly identify and address any potential cases.
Additionally, NBMA reiterated its focus on reinforcing the country’s vaccination and public health response strategies to prevent any resurgence of COVID-19 or its variants.
In light of these developments, NBMA issued an advisory urging Nigerians to stay informed through trusted health sources to avoid misinformation that could undermine efforts to control the spread of COVID-19.
The agency also advised citizens to continue adhering to preventive measures, including wearing masks, practicing good hand hygiene, maintaining physical distancing, and ensuring proper ventilation in indoor spaces.
NBMA further encouraged eligible individuals to get vaccinated and receive booster shots, noting that vaccination remains one of the most effective ways to protect against severe illness from COVID-19.
“We urge the public to cooperate fully with health authorities if any suspected or confirmed cases of the XEC variant are detected,” the agency’s statement said.
“This includes adhering to quarantine and isolation guidelines to prevent further spread.”
The NBMA stressed its ongoing commitment to biosecurity and pledged to continue monitoring the situation, providing updates as necessary, and responding swiftly to any developments.
