Niger State Governor, Mohammed Bago, has launched the “Bago Electrifying Niger Agenda,” an initiative aimed at overhauling 600 transformers to improve power access across the state.
Speaking during the official flag-off of the project, the governor revealed that 60 transformers have already been overhauled, with 200 more slated for distribution to communities in need.
The governor noted that despite the state’s position as home to four hydroelectric dams, it was constantly relying solely on the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), which is not sustainable.
This, he said motivated the state government to commit to extensive investments in transformer repairs and upgrades.
In addition, he said that the present administration has cleared over N1 billion in debt to AEDC and formed a partnership aimed at ensuring consistent power supply for residents.
On his part, the Director-General of the Niger State Electricity Board, Yakubu Katamba, noted that the initiative has already saved the state an estimated N20 billion by reducing the need for costly new transformers.
As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility, he added that Atizan Concept Limited also plans to train Niger State youths in advanced transformer repair and overhaul technologies.
Meanwhile, the Project Coordinator, Aminu Ahmadu assured that all transformers were rebuilt with high-quality materials and will include a ten-year guarantee.
Furthermore, the Commissioner for Power and Renewable Energy, Muhammed Lokogoma, added that the construction of a new 10 MVA substation is underway in Lapai at a cost of N979 million to improve power supply in that area.
