Tanzania completes $300m Magufuli Bridge with own revenue

Tanzania has proudly announced the completion of the Magufuli Bridge, the longest bridge in East Africa. This monumental infrastructure project, constructed for $300 million, is a testament to the nation’s commitment to enhancing connectivity and fostering economic growth in the region.

The 3.2-kilometer bridge, formerly known as the Kigongo-Busisi Bridge, has been renamed in honour of the late President John Pombe Magufuli, whose leadership was marked by a focus on infrastructural development.

This strategic infrastructure significantly reduces travel time across Lake Victoria, cutting the journey from approximately two hours to a mere four minutes. Such efficiency is expected to stimulate trade and commerce, particularly benefiting neighbouring countries like Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi by facilitating quicker and more reliable transportation of goods and services.

Notably, the Magufuli Bridge is entirely financed through Tanzania’s revenues, showcasing the country’s financial independence and capacity for large-scale projects without relying on foreign aid or loans.

This achievement is projected to position the bridge among the top ten longest bridges on the African continent, further enhancing Tanzania’s reputation as a leader in infrastructure development within the region.

The bridge’s inauguration is anticipated to take place before the end of the year, with President Samia Suluhu Hassan scheduled to preside over the ceremony. This event marks not only the completion of a significant engineering feat but also a pivotal moment for Tanzania’s economic future, as improved transportation infrastructure is crucial for regional integration and development.

As the country looks to the future, the Magufuli Bridge symbolizes a bold step toward modernization, potentially attracting further investments and facilitating increased trade routes that connect East Africa and beyond.
