Heart attack and Cardiac Arrest may sound the same but are not. A Heart Attack occurs when your heart is starved of blood, due to a blockage in blood flow. Another name for it is MI (Myocardial Infarction)

During a heart attack, some parts of your heart muscles do not get enough blood flow. This is usually due to the blockage of one or more arteries that supply blood to the heart.

When there is no blood flow, the part of the heart that is affected begins to die. If it’s not handled immediately or early enough, this can lead to permanent heart damage. When it occurs, it affects how much blood reaches other parts of your body.

What Are the Symptoms of Heart Attack?

Unlike in cardiac arrest, the symptoms of a Heart attack may not be as rapid but could set in within minutes to hours of trigger.

Some common symptoms include:

•Chest pain; it can radiate to arms, shoulder, waist, neck and jaw.

•Shortness of breath

•Sweating

•A sensation that may look like heartburn or indigestion

•Insomnia (trouble sleeping )

•Anxiety

•Palpitations

•Nausea

•Lightheadedness

What Are The Risk Factors of Heart Attack

•Men are at higher risk

•Older age

•Family history

•Preeclampsia

•High Chesterol

•Diabetes

•Poor lifestyle like; drug use, excessive alcohol, smoking, and excessive fatty foods

•Lack of physical activities

What Are the Complications if not treated immediately

•Stroke
•Heart failure
•Sudden cardiac death
•Cardiogenic shock
•Heart valve problems
•Depression and Anxiety

How To Prevent a Heart Attack

•Regular checkup

•Regular exercise

•Maintaining healthy weight

•Avoiding tobacco use

•Eating healthy meals

•Managing existing health conditions

•Taking medicines as prescribed

•Eating healthy meals

Cardiac Arrest

Cardiac Arrest is an electrical issue of the heart.

It is a sudden loss of heart function, where the heart stops beating completely or beats so fast that it doesn’t fill in blood anymore. When this happens every part of the body is starved of oxygen-rich blood and they become at risk of death.

Symptoms of Cardiac Arrest

🍭Fainting
🍭Shortness of breath
🍭Palpitations
🍭Chest pain
🍭Dizziness
🍭Nausea and vomiting

The symptoms are similar to the symptoms of Heart attack, but the symptoms of cardiac arrest may start without warning signs.

What are the Risk Factors?

🍭Obesity

🍭Diabetes

🍭Personal or family history Ventricular tachycardia

🍭Family history of cardiac arrest

🍭History of Fainting

🍭Use of recreational drugs

Complications of Cardiac Arrest

🍭Cognition issues

🍭Chronic Fatigue

🍭Mental Health Issues

🍭Death may also result

The means of lowering the risk of Cardiac Arrest are similar to those adopted in Heart Attack.

If you notice any of these symptoms, it is important to see a healthcare provider for proper diagnosis.
