The Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has reported that devastating floods have claimed 16 lives and destroyed 3,936 homes across the state.
The floods, triggered by torrential rains since the onset of the 2024 rainy season, have also submerged 2,744 hectares of farmland.
The Executive Secretary of SEMA, Dr Haruna Mairiga, disclosed the grim figures on Wednesday in Dutse, noting that the disaster has affected 10 local government areas.
The fatalities were caused by building collapses, drowning, and canoe accidents.
“The disaster resulted in 16 deaths, with 3,936 persons displaced, and 2,744 hectares of farmland submerged,” Mairiga said, warning that the situation could worsen with the forecasted heavy rains.
To alleviate the suffering of those affected, the agency has provided temporary shelter and distributed relief materials, including rice, maize, maize grits, blankets, pasta, and mats, to the displaced persons.
