The Women in Energy Oil and Gas (WEOG) group in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) held their August Leadership Series online through Zoom. The event brought together women professionals and leaders from across Nigeria’s energy, oil, and gas industries.
With the theme “Women in Leadership – Beyond the Titles,” the conference focused on more than just talks. It became a strong platform to redefine what leadership means, celebrate women working in energy, and push for change in a male-dominated field.
Mrs. Ojiah Victoria Ogwuche moderated the event, which featured many speakers who shared different views on leadership, strength, and empowering others.
Dr. Ann Ihuoma Dozie-Enukora, who leads Servicom at NUPRC and is Chairperson of WEOG FCT, gave the welcome speech. She said true leadership is not about having a title, but about serving others, having a vision, and making an impact. “Leadership is not just a title,” she said. “It’s about being strong, brave, and inspiring others. What we do with leadership shapes our legacy.”
She encouraged women to lead with kindness and honesty, build support systems, and always remember their roles as family members and coworkers. She reminded the audience that true legacy comes from making a difference, not from receiving awards.
Speaking for the national WEOG body, Dame Hasiya Hassan Audu, who handles external relations, explained the group’s purpose. WEOG was founded in 2018 and officially registered. It was created to promote gender inclusion in oil and gas and supports the UN’s Goal 5 on gender equality.
Dame Audu said WEOG helps women take on leadership roles, fill gaps in the industry, and support national growth. The group focuses on three main areas: closing gender gaps, fighting energy poverty through new ideas and advocacy, and making sure Africa’s energy benefits its people. “A diverse workforce helps businesses and the country grow,” she added.
The keynote speaker was Prof. Zainab Gobir, Executive Director of NMDPRA. Her talk, titled “The Silent Weight of Success,” discussed the hidden struggles of leadership. She said women bring special traits—like vision, care, and empathy—that make them great leaders, but they often face gender bias, lack of guidance, and even competition from other women.
She said getting a seat at the leadership table is not easy. Women need to stay focused, true to their goals, and strong. “Leadership isn’t quick or easy—it takes hard work and passion.” She urged women to support one another and work together in male-dominated spaces.
Mr. Francis Elimimian, CEO of Maczorian Services in Canada, gave a talk titled “The Fact That It Is Lonely at the Top.” He said women leaders often feel alone, despite their success. He compared it to tall trees in a forest—only a few reach the top. He encouraged building networks and mentorship programs to help reduce this loneliness.
Dr. Gloria Ahmed spoke on “Balancing Power and Vulnerability.” She reminded women that leadership isn’t a solo path—it needs teamwork. She encouraged women to know their strengths, grow their skills, and work with others. “Every woman has what it takes to lead,” she said.
Mrs. Sarah Ajose-Adeogun also highlighted the importance of being strong and intentional. “Our legacy is not about the positions we hold but about the lives we change,” she said. She encouraged women to support each other and find allies to walk with them on their journey.
Dr. Nneka Perpetua Emeka-Aguodoh closed the session with her talk, “Sisterhood Over Silence.” She spoke about the power of strong support systems among women. Sisterhood, she said, is more than just friendship—it’s about sharing ideas, encouraging one another, and celebrating together. “Supportive communities make sure no woman is left behind,” she said.
The conference ended with a strong message: Women in oil and gas must lead with honesty, care, and unity. WEOG made it clear that this event was more than just a leadership talk—it was a renewed commitment to helping women grow, closing gender gaps, and shaping the future of energy leadership in Nigeria and beyond.
