The Executive Director of Paradigm Initiative, Mr. Gbenga Sesan, has described data privacy awareness in Nigeria as alarmingly low, despite growing internet penetration.
Speaking in an interview on Wednesday in Lagos, Sesan referenced recent data from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), which reported an internet penetration rate of 45.5% with 103 million internet users as of January 2024.
He noted that while this figure reflects significant digital adoption, it also highlights the urgent need for greater data privacy awareness, particularly among the offline population.
Sesan emphasized that raising awareness about data privacy cannot be left to the government alone. He urged organizations and individuals to take responsibility for educating Nigerians about their data rights.
“There is already a law protecting Nigerians, but many are unaware of it,” he said. “The agency responsible must simplify this law into digestible information, but before that happens, everyone should take at least 15 minutes to read up on their rights.”
Beyond awareness, Sesan stressed the importance of enabling Nigerians to seek redress when their data is misused. He highlighted Ripoti, a dedicated online platform where individuals can report data breaches and receive free legal support.
“If someone misuses your information, you can report it at ripoti.africa, and legal professionals will help ensure the offender is held accountable,” he explained.
Paradigm Initiative, a non-profit organization, advocates for digital rights and inclusion across Africa. Through its ICT-driven support system, the organization continues to push for stronger data protection policies and public awareness to safeguard digital users.
