Google has announced a major initiative to boost higher education across Africa by offering its premium AI subscription, Google AI Pro, free to university students for 12 months.
The Managing Director of Google Sub-Saharan Africa, Alex Okosi, said in a statement on Wednesday that the offer targets eligible students aged 18 and above in Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Rwanda, South Africa, and Zimbabwe.
According to Okosi, the initiative will give students access to Google’s most advanced AI tools to enhance their learning, research, and creative work.
He noted that the offer builds on Google’s long-standing commitment to Africa’s digital transformation through programmes such as the Google for Startups Accelerator Africa and the Digital Skills for Africa initiative, which has helped millions of people and businesses grow.
Okosi said the free AI access, powered by Gemini 2.5 Pro, aims to equip the next generation of African leaders, innovators, and creators with essential AI literacy skills.
“We are seeing a new wave of innovation in Africa, driven by the energy and ingenuity of our young people,” Okosi said. “By providing students with access to our most advanced AI tools, we want to empower them to excel in their studies and become builders and shapers of the future.
“This offer is about democratizing access to technology and giving African students the skills to compete and lead on a global stage.”
The Google AI Pro plan includes a suite of tools tailored for academic and creative needs, such as guided learning, academic summarization, code debugging, and step-by-step assistance for complex problems.
Okosi highlighted that the new deep research feature allows students to generate comprehensive reports from hundreds of web sources within minutes — transforming how they approach long-form assignments and dissertations.
The verification process, he said, is straightforward and requires confirming student status and a payment method, though no charges will apply. The offer will remain open for redemption between October 7 and December 9, 2025.
Eligible university students can verify their status and activate the 12-month free plan by visiting gemini.google/students.
