Google has introduced a new feature called AI Mode in Search in Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa. This new tool is expected to change how many Africans search for and use information online.
The feature uses Google’s Gemini 2.5 AI technology. It can answer more complicated questions and give detailed, helpful responses. People can now search using text, voice, or images, which makes it easier to plan trips, learn new things, or explore topics without having to ask many separate questions.
“This is about creating a new kind of Search experience for people in Africa,” said Alex Okosi, Google Africa’s Managing Director. “AI Mode will help users find answers more easily and also explore more content from the internet.”
While some AI tools don’t show where their answers come from, Google’s AI Mode includes links to websites in its answers. This helps users explore more information and supports website owners by giving them visibility. If Google’s AI isn’t confident about an answer, it will show regular search results instead.
One key feature of AI Mode is called “query fan-out.” This means it breaks a big question into smaller parts and searches for answers to all of them at once. This gives users more detailed and useful results that might be missed in a normal search.
The feature is available starting today. AI Mode will appear as a new tab in Google Search and in the Google app on both Android and iPhone devices.
