Google DeepMind offers fully funded AI science scholarships for African students

Google DeepMind has launched the 2025 AI for Science Scholarships, offering African students a fully funded opportunity to pursue postgraduate degrees at the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS). This initiative aims to nurture talent in AI, machine learning, and mathematical sciences across the continent.

What the scholarship covers

These scholarships are comprehensive, covering:

  • Tuition fees
  • Living stipends
  • Relocation costs
  • Research expenses

Recipients will also have access to essential resources such as computing tools, reliable internet, and electricity.

Eligibility criteria

To qualify for the Google DeepMind AI for Science Scholarship, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Citizenship: Be African citizens and residents at the time of application.
  • Academic background: Hold a completed four-year undergraduate degree or a three-year degree with an honours year by August or December 2025.
  • Field of study: Have a background in mathematics, physics, computer science, statistics, engineering, or any discipline with strong mathematical or computational components.
  • AIMS History: Applicants must not have previously held an AIMS scholarship.

Scholarship benefits

Selected students will receive full funding for postgraduate studies lasting up to two years. Additional benefits include:

  • Living and travel stipends: Support for housing, relocation, and other expenses.
  • Access to AI events: Invitations to Google DeepMind-hosted AI-related conferences and events for networking and professional growth.
  • Expert mentorship: Guidance from Google DeepMind professionals to enhance both academic and career prospects.

To apply for the scholarship, candidates must prepare the following documents:

  1. Completed application form
  2. Curriculum vitae (CV)
  3. Motivation letter (approximately 500 words)
  4. Academic transcripts
  5. Responses to written mathematics and coding problems provided on the application portal

Selection process

  • Preliminary assessment: Applications will be reviewed for eligibility and completeness.
  • Mathematics and coding tasks: Applicants will complete a set of tasks designed to evaluate their problem-solving skills.
  • Online Interviews: Shortlisted candidates will participate in virtual interviews scheduled for May 2025.
