The Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), Professor Adenike Oladiji, has cautioned newly admitted students for the 2024/2025 academic session on the use of social media and the internet, and against engaging in anti-social and deviant behaviours that could jeopardize their educational journey. She delivered this message during the opening of the orientation program for the fresh students on Monday, December 16, 2024.
Highlighting specific no-go areas, Professor Oladiji warned against indecent dressing, violent conduct (such as fighting and vandalism), disrespect towards university staff, and examination malpractices. She emphasized the severe repercussions of impersonation, stating that offenders—both the impersonator and the accomplice—would face automatic expulsion.
Caution on Internet use
The Vice-Chancellor also advised students to exercise caution in using social media and the internet. While acknowledging the internet’s positive impact, she warned against its misuse for harmful activities such as cyber-stalking, cyber-bullying, phishing, and other fraudulent acts. “The management will not condone any activity capable of tarnishing the university’s reputation,” she stated.
Upholding FUTA’s reputation
Professor Oladiji reiterated FUTA’s status as one of Nigeria’s top ten universities over the last decade and its long-standing position as the leading University of Technology in Nigeria. She urged students to uphold the institution’s values and reputation, which have been built through years of dedication.
For successful academic and personal growth, she encouraged students to familiarize themselves with the information in the student handbook, prioritize their studies, and avoid negative influences. She reminded them of their families’ sacrifices to secure their education, urging them to remain focused on their goals.

Professor Oladiji assured the students that FUTA’s management is committed to providing essential facilities to make their stay memorable. “We strive to create a conducive learning environment. FUTA has one of the best records in Nigeria for addressing student concerns. We operate a ‘no-door’ policy, symbolizing our openness and commitment to your welfare,” she said.
Dean of student affairs remarks
Earlier in his welcome address, the Dean of Student Affairs, Professor David Oke, congratulated the new students and urged them to embrace the university’s vision of becoming a world-class center for technology, research, and service delivery. He highlighted FUTA’s core values: Integrity, Creativity and Innovativeness, Accountability, Rationality, and Excellence.
Professor Oke encouraged the freshers to actively participate in the orientation program, ensuring a smooth transition from secondary school to university life.
