The Federal University Lokoja (FUL) has commenced the construction of a 1.72-megawatt solar power plant valued at N3 billion (about $200 million) to enhance sustainable energy and academic excellence on campus.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olayemi Akinwumi, disclosed this at a news conference in Lokoja ahead of the university’s 9th Convocation Ceremony.
Akinwumi said the project, supported by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the World Bank under the Energizing Education Programme, marks a significant stride towards energy independence and environmental sustainability.
“This landmark project is a testament to the university’s commitment to environmental responsibility and operational self-reliance,” he stated.
He explained that the solar plant would enable the university to generate surplus electricity, reduce its dependence on the national grid, and provide clean, renewable energy for the campus community.
“We believe the 1.72-megawatt system will ensure energy self-sufficiency and benefit students and staff for generations to come,” Akinwumi added.
The Vice-Chancellor said the initiative would also serve as a model for other educational institutions seeking sustainable energy solutions.
On the forthcoming convocation, Akinwumi announced that 5,051 graduates would receive various degrees and diplomas, comprising 3,466 undergraduates, 747 diploma holders, and 838 postgraduates.
“Out of the total, 35 students earned First Class honors, 760 Second Class Upper, 2,287 Second Class Lower, 383 Third Class, while one student graduated with a Pass,” he said.
Akinwumi, whose tenure as Vice-Chancellor will end after the convocation, reflected on his administration’s achievements, noting that the university has transformed remarkably despite financial challenges.
He highlighted the expansion of faculties and programmes, infrastructural growth, and the completion or ongoing execution of 34 major projects.
“FUL has evolved from a modest institution into a multi-faculty university with strong academic offerings, accredited programmes, and research-driven initiatives,” he said.
The Vice-Chancellor expressed appreciation to the governing council, management, staff, students, and the media for their continuous support and partnership.
The 9th Convocation Ceremony, scheduled for October 18, will feature a week-long series of events, including a press briefing, public lectures, a research fair and exhibition, and a musical concert celebrating scholarship and excellence.
