ASHENEWS reports that the Department of Human Physiology at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) has celebrated Physiology Week in grand style, showcasing the importance of physiology in medical education and clinical practice.

Physiology Week was declared by the Physiological Society (Physoc) of the United Kingdom, a global organization with representation and memberships from around the world.

The head of the Department of Human Physiology at ATBU, Dr. Philemon Paul Mshelia, organized two main events to mark the occasion.

The first event was an online webinar session on data analysis for students, teachers, and researchers.

Led by renowned data analyst, biomedical research consultant, and lecturer Dr. N. S. Emmanuel from Ahmadu Bello University in Kaduna State, the session highlighted the crucial role of data management in various fields, especially in academia.

The second event was a public lecture for basic medical students on “The Significance of Physiology to Life and Clinical Practice.”

A consultant hematologist at ATBU Teaching Hospital, and the Deputy CMAC-Clinicals Dr. Rufai Dachi,, delivered the lecture.

Dachi emphasized the importance of physiology as the science of life, focusing on the normal functions of the human body.

During the lecture, the Consultant traced the history of physiology and discussed its various specializations, showcasing the value of physiology in clinical practice and its prospects for medical students.

He highlighted that physiology is an integral and essential component of medicine, providing a strong foundation for competent medical practitioners.

“Medical students are strongly encouraged to pay special attention to the study of physiology,” Dr. Dachi emphasized.

“A good and sound knowledge of physiology sets an unshakable background for a competent medical practitioner. It makes the remaining journey of medical education smoother.”

Physiology is an academic subject in medical sciences and a medical specialty department, known as clinical physiology, in some European countries.

It employs a functional approach to understanding the pathogenesis of diseases and serves as a foundation for understanding clinical specialties.

The Physiology Week celebration at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University showcased the university’s commitment to providing quality education in medical sciences and the significance of physiology in producing skilled medical professionals.

The event was attended by students, faculty members, and medical professionals who praised the initiative and expressed their enthusiasm for further advancements in the field of physiology.
