Joe Biden has been sworn in as the 46th president of the United States, after the Electoral College votes for him and the Congress’ confirmation of his electoral victory against outgone Donald Trump.
The inauguration came after Trump’s attempts through his supporters to subvert Biden’s victory by occupying the US Capitol to overturn the election results.
Biden was sworn in by Chief Justice John Roberts to “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.
“It’s a new day in America,” Biden wrote on Twitter before the inauguration as, in a sign of his push for unity, he prayed alongside congressional leaders at a Roman Catholic church.
Meanwhile, former California Senator Kamala Harris was earlier sworn in as the first ever female vice president of the United States.
Harris, 56, took the oath of office from Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor in a ceremony at the US Capitol.
She is the first Black woman and the first woman of South Asian descent to become US vice president.
