ASHENEWS reports that a group of concerned members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Sokoto State has expressed grave concerns over recent allegations bordering on sabotage made by the state party chairman, Bello Goronyo.

The PDP recently held a stakeholder meeting where Goronyo was reported to have made allegations, which suggested that certain party members have been contracted to undermine the PDP.

The reported allegations have stirred significant unrest among the party’s rank and file.

A press conference addressed by Prof. Hamza Maishanu at the residence of former State Governor, Attahiru Bafarawa on Saturday, was attended by representatives from all 23 local government party executives, party stalwarts, members of the national executive council from the northwest, and a governorship aspirant from the 2019 elections.

Maishanu, on behalf of the concerned members, outlined their commitment to rejuvenating the PDP in Sokoto State with the aim of reclaiming power in the 2027 elections.

They, however, highlighted their alarm at Goronyo’s comments made during the party stakeholders meeting on June 2, 2024.

“The chairman alleged that some members of the party had been contracted to destroy the PDP. Such provocative statements can only sow seeds of discord within the party,” said Prof. Hamza Maishanu, a spokesperson for the group.

According to him, the group sought an audience with Goronyo to clarify these statements but allegedly declined to meet with it.

Consequently, they have posed several critical questions to the chairman, demanding transparency and accountability:

1. Who are those contracted to destroy the PDP in Sokoto State?

2. Who contracted them for this nefarious task?

3. How much was paid or promised for the execution of this contract?

4. Where and when was this contract given?

The concerned members emphasized the necessity of answering these questions for the well-being of the party.

They also warned that if the allegations were unfounded and intended to create divisions for selfish gains, they would resist such attempts vigorously.

“If the chairman has evidence to support his allegations, he should make it public. If not, he must retract his statements and work towards restoring harmony within the party,” Maishanu added.

The group reiterated their commitment to democratic principles within the PDP, advocating for transparent and democratic selection of party leaders from the ward level to the state leadership.

The PDP in Sokoto State now faces a critical moment, with its members calling for clarity and unity to strengthen the party’s position ahead of the upcoming elections.
