Seplat Energy Plc has reaffirmed that domestic gas development holds the key to Nigeria’s and Africa’s economic prosperity — powering homes, industries, and transportation while driving cleaner energy adoption.
Speaking at the 2025 Africa Energy Week (AEW) in Cape Town, Mr. Okechukwu Mba, Seplat’s Director of New Energy, said the company is making bold investments in domestic gas infrastructure, including pipelines, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) facilities.
He stressed that resolving challenges in the gas-to-power value chain — from production to electricity delivery — is vital for Nigeria’s quest for stable power.
“Bankable anchor customers are needed to underpin new gas projects,” Mba said. “We must urgently fix the bottlenecks in power transmission, distribution, and liquidity to unlock further gas investments.”
Seplat currently supplies gas to five power stations nationwide and plans to increase its operated gas output to over 1 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) by 2030, supported by new government incentives.
The company also aims to commence LPG deliveries from its Sapele and ANOH gas plants this year, complementing its butane output from the Bonny River Terminal. This will make Seplat one of Nigeria’s leading LPG suppliers — replacing biomass and improving health conditions through cleaner cooking options.
Mba noted that Seplat’s investment in CNG will expand gas availability to customers outside the pipeline network, boosting industrial and transportation access to affordable energy.
“Gas provides reliable and affordable base load energy to drive sustainable economic growth,” he added.
Meanwhile, Ms. Chioma Afe, Seplat’s Director of External Affairs and Social Performance, said the company’s ESG framework is tailored to African realities, emphasizing community engagement, sustainability, and practical solutions to local challenges.
