Dangote Petroleum Refinery has refuted reports suggesting that it imported finished petrol with high sulphur content into Nigeria, describing the claims as “false, misleading, and unfounded.”
In a statement issued on Friday, the company explained that the cargo in question was an intermediate feedstock — not finished petrol — and would undergo full processing in its refinery to produce fuels that meet both Nigerian and international quality standards.
“As a world-scale complex refinery, we process a wide range of crude oils and intermediate feedstocks. This is standard practice in global refining, designed to optimise production efficiency and product quality,” the statement read.
Located within a Free Trade Zone, Dangote Petroleum Refinery emphasised that it refines and sells only high-quality fuels that comply with all regulatory specifications. The company also highlighted that its products are already being exported to the United States and Europe, regions known for stringent fuel-quality regulations — a testament, it said, to its adherence to global benchmarks for safety and environmental standards.
Dangote Refinery added that all imported feedstocks are backed by quality certificates, which are shared transparently with relevant regulators. “We are also prepared to make these documents publicly available to ensure full transparency and accountability,” the company assured.
Reaffirming its commitment to Nigeria’s energy independence, the refinery pledged to continue upholding best practices in refining and to deliver cleaner, high-quality fuels for both local consumption and export.
