ASHENEWS reports that one of Nigeria’s legal luminary, Chidi Odinkalu, on his X handle @ChidiOdinkalu on Sunday, reacted to the address by the President of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) on the issue of the IT contact.

He writes:

In a compelling revelation at the National Executive Committee (NEC) gathering preceding the commencement of the 2023 Annual General Conference in Abuja, Mr. Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau, President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), delved into the heart of nepotism allegations and convoluted IT contract disputes that have gripped the legal fraternity.

Addressing a captivated audience, President Maikyau did not mince words as he delved into the intricate saga surrounding his nephew, Mr. Solomon Magaji, and the contentious IT service contracts. President Maikyau dismissed claims of nepotism, underscoring that Magaji’s appointment was based on his extensive expertise spanning over 30 years. “He’s been my IT consultant for over 30 years in my own office,” the President emphasized.

The President’s narrative took a gripping turn as he chronicled his efforts to streamline IT contracts, including retaining the services of an incumbent consultant named Adams, inherited from the prior administration. Maikyau showcased his commitment to continuity and a seamless transition in the delicate realm of IT responsibilities within the NBA.

Unveiling a series of alarming incidents, Maikyau delved into discrepancies in internet service billing, server ownership, and alleged fraudulent activities. He recounted a shocking case where a consultant manipulated internet billing, overcharging the association and potentially subjecting it to blacklisting. Documents and evidence were cited to authenticate these startling revelations.

A pivotal moment of the address was President Maikyau’s unwavering call for transparency and accountability. He vociferously defended his actions and integrity against allegations of corruption, asserting, “I am not a thief. I am not a crook. You should know that.” He further extended this commitment to accountability by urging for an audit of all IT contracts and services within the NBA.

The President’s address shed light on the web of misconduct within the IT sphere, and he fervently urged attendees to ascertain facts independently. As the 2023 Annual General Conference unfolds, President Maikyau’s revelations have set the stage for rigorous discussions on ethics, accountability, and the complex interplay between family ties and professional obligations. The Nigerian legal community remains gripped by this unprecedented exposé as they grapple with the implications of these revelations.
