UN launches emergency response after Türkiye, Syria quakes

In its condolence message to the affected persons, the UN Secretary General, António Guterres clamoured for international support for the victims of the earthquakes in the two countries.“My heart goes out to the people of Türkiye and Syria in this hour of tragedy.“The United Nations is fully committed to supporting the response.
“Our teams are on the ground assessing the needs and providing assistance, Guterres, said in a statement.
The UN estimates that the earthquake completely destroyed 224 buildings across 17 areas while no fewer than 325 others partially destroyed.
A situation overview published by theUN aid coordination office OHCHA, said there had been “close to 2,000 death reported” in the two countries impacted, with at least 78 aftershocks reported, ahead of the second earthquake.
