India has temporarily suspended most postal deliveries to the United States starting Monday, August 25, 2025, citing confusion over new U.S. customs tariff rules.
Why India suspended postal deliveries
The Ministry of Communications said the decision follows new regulations introduced by Washington that require transport carriers or other “qualified parties” to collect and remit duties on inbound parcels.
However, the procedures remain unclear, and major airlines have informed Indian authorities that they are not ready to handle consignments under the new system.
What items are affected
From the effective date, parcels, merchandise, and most non-document shipments to the U.S. will no longer be accepted at Indian post offices.
Only the following items are exempt:
Letters and documents
Gift items valued at $100 or less
Government response
The Department of Posts emphasized that this suspension is temporary. Officials said they are awaiting further guidance from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and the United States Postal Service (USPS) before resuming full services.
The ministry also noted that it is working with carriers and logistics providers to minimize disruptions and restore normal postal operations as quickly as possible.
Global impact of U.S. tariff changes
India’s suspension mirrors similar moves by other countries, especially in Europe, where postal operators have halted deliveries to the U.S.
The disruption follows the sudden elimination of the “de minimis” exemption, a long-standing policy that allowed low-value international packages to enter the U.S. duty-free. Its removal has created uncertainty for postal services worldwide.
What it means for Indian businesses and individuals
The suspension is expected to impact:
Small businesses that rely on postal networks for cross-border trade
Students and families sending packages abroad
Exporters of low-value goods, who may now face delays and higher costs
For now, the government has advised individuals and businesses to explore alternative courier or freight services until the situation is resolved.
