A physiotherapist at Lifeguard Hospital, Aishat Abdulraheem, has cautioned parents of children suffering from cerebral palsy to avoid locking them indoors so as not to hinder their physical, mental and emotional growth.
Cerebral palsy is a neurological disorder resulting from an abnormal brain development, occurring during pregnancy, at birth or shortly after birth, which affects an individual’s movement and posture.
The physiotherapist advises parents of children with cerebral palsy to seek professional help for assessment and early intervention, rather than isolating them at home.
Abdulraheem, while speaking on Wednesday in Ilorin that isolation decreases their self esteem and increases social anxiety.
“She emphasised the importance of regular assessments and social integration for holistic development, noting that early intervention significantly improves motor skills, balance, and coordination in children with cerebral palsy.
“Isolating children with cerebral palsy can cause more harm than good, instead parents should seek for professional help to enhance their cognitive development, social skills and emotional well-being.
“Professional help is crucial as it improves their mobility and independence. Personalised treatment plans also play a vital role in enhancing their overall quality of life,” she said.
