ASHENEWS reports that the World Health Organization (WHO) has declared that road systems around the world still remain unsafe and unsustainable.
In a statement to commemorate the 2023 World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, the Chair of the UN Road Safety Collaboration, Dr Etinne Krug said that the road systems remain car-centric adding that the car-centric approach to mobility have left far too many people behind.
He urged countries around the world to rethink mobility while developing road systems adding that walking, cycling and using public transport are the future and nations would need to make them safe.
Krug who is also the Director, Social Determinants of Health at the WHO disclosed that the WHO will be releasing the fifth global status reports on road safety adding that without accelerated action, the Decade of Action’s ambitious 50 per cent reduction target will not be achieved.
Speaking on the 2023 World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, Krug said that the best way to honor the lives of those lost on the world’s roads is to do better road safety management, better legislation and enforcement, better road and vehicle design, and better emergency care systems.
“Another year has passed and more than a million families have been left with senseless grief following a loss due to a road traffic crash.
“We owe this to all who have been needlessly lost on the world’s roads, and we owe it to the families who live without them.
“My thoughts go out to all of you on this World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims; I so much wish that we would not have to commemorate this day”, he added.
