Sokoto health professionals have shed light on the causes, symptoms, and management of urinary tract infections (UTIs), which are common health issues affecting millions worldwide. They emphasized the importance of early detection and preventive measures to reduce the prevalence of these infections.
Speaking at various hospitals in Sokoto, experts noted that UTIs affect women more frequently due to anatomical factors but can also impact men, children, and the elderly.
Understanding UTIs
The urinary system, which includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra, is designed to protect against infections. However, bacteria like Escherichia coli (E. coli) can enter and multiply, causing infections.
Dr. Lawal Shehu of Specialist Hospital explained that UTIs are categorized based on the site of infection, ranging from cystitis (bladder infection) to pyelonephritis (kidney infection), with varying levels of severity.
Symptoms and Risk Factors
Nurse Bashir Ali said that common symptoms include painful urination, frequent urges to urinate, blood in the urine, and lower abdominal pain. Risk factors include poor hygiene, dehydration, and unprotected sex. Women are particularly susceptible due to shorter urethras, hormonal changes, and pregnancy.
Treatment approaches
Treatment depends on the type of infection. Dr Shehu stated that bacterial infections are treated with antibiotics such as Ciprofloxacin or Doxycycline, while fungal infections require antifungal medications like Ketoconazole. Advanced cases may involve specialized tests like urinalysis or microbiological examinations.
Prevention and awareness
Preventive measures were also emphasized. These include staying hydrated, practising good hygiene, urinating after sex, and treating infections promptly.
Mrs. Fauziya Bala, a laboratory head, urged women to avoid high-risk contraceptives like diaphragms with spermicide and to seek medical advice if symptoms appear.
Special considerations
Mr. Solomon Okwenne said the risks UTIs pose to children, include potential kidney damage due to urinary reflux. He advised parents to ensure prompt treatment and regular health checkups for affected children.
The experts concluded by urging residents to prioritize personal hygiene, avoid unsafe water, and seek timely medical attention for any urinary discomfort, emphasizing that early intervention is crucial for effective treatment.
