The Vatican has officially revealed the cause of death of Pope Francis, who passed away peacefully on Monday at the age of 88.
According to a statement released by the Holy See, the pontiff died of heart failure brought on by complications related to his longstanding respiratory and mobility issues.
Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, had served as the 266th pope of the Roman Catholic Church since his election in March 2013. He was the first pope from the Americas and the first Jesuit to assume the role.

“The Holy Father died peacefully in his residence at the Vatican in the early hours of the morning. His final moments were marked by prayer, accompanied by his closest aides,” the Vatican said in an official communiqué.
Francis had been increasingly limited in mobility in recent years and had been hospitalized several times for bronchial and pulmonary issues. Vatican doctors noted that despite intensive care, his health had declined steadily over the past few weeks.
Tributes have poured in from global leaders, religious figures, and millions of faithful Catholics around the world. Pope Francis is remembered for his humility, emphasis on mercy, and advocacy for the poor and marginalized.
Preparations are now underway for a historic funeral at St. Peter’s Basilica. The College of Cardinals is expected to convene within days to begin the process of selecting a new pope.
Further updates on the funeral arrangements and period of mourning will be provided by the Vatican Press Office.
