A Urologist, Dr Chidiebere Ogo, has urged the Federal Government to establish cancer screening centres nationwide to reduce the burden in the country.
Ogo, a Chief Consultant at Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, Ogun State, made the appeal in an interview on Monday in Ota.
He said that the appeal became necessary following a surge in prostate cancer patients seeking medical treatment.
He added that 80 per cent of the patients go to the hospital when the case has gone beyond medical treatment.
He said “Federal Government should encourage nationwide cancer screening so that patients can benefit from this global movement.
“In addition, government should include cancer screening in the Health Insurance Scheme so that individuals could be screened before it gets late.”
The urologist stressed the need to also take primary healthcare seriously to reduce the number of cases.
He advised men above 40 years to go for prostate cancer screening for early detection and treatment.
