101 staff working for the United Nation Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) working with and for Palestine Refugees have been killed in Gaza.
It was gathered that many of the staff were killed with their familes.
The UN flags on Monday were lowered to half-mast at Headquarters and offices around the world to mourn and honor the colleagues.
The UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres alongside other personal from all duty stations observed a minute of silence at 09:30 am to mourn and honor the deceased colleagues.
On his X page, the UN Chief wrote, “Today, the @UN family observed a moment of silence to mourn & honour our colleagues killed in Gaza.
“Since the start of this conflict, more than 100 @UNRWA staff have lost their lives – the highest number of UN aid workers killed in a conflict in such a short time. They will never be forgotten.”
In his speech during the gathering, the UN Director General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that the deceased were dedicated individuals who embodied the spirit of the UN.
He said that they put their lives on the line to bring hope and relief to those affected by violence and despair adding that the memory and impact they made will forever remain.
“Today, we gather with heavy hearts to remember and honor our dear UN colleagues who tragically lost their lives in #Gaza. Their unwavering commitment, sacrifice, and bravery will forever be etched in our memories.
‘Their memory and the impact they made will forever remain. Their unwavering dedication to peace, justice, and the well-being of others serves as a guiding light and a reminder of the importance of our shared mission.
“In the face of immense challenges and danger, they remained steadfast in their commitment to make a difference in the lives of those they served. Their courage and selflessness touched the lives of countless individuals and communities”, he said.
While condoling the families and loved ones left behind by the deceased, Ghebreyesus noted that their loss is immeasurable, and the UN stands in solidarity with them during this difficult time.
He stated that the United Nations would honor their memory and recommit to the pursuit of peace, justice, and the well-being of all people.
“As we reflect on the lives of our fallen colleagues, let us also recognize the importance of unity and collaboration.
“Together, we can continue their important work and strive for a world where conflicts are resolved peacefully, where the rights of all individuals are respected, and where humanitarian aid reaches those in need without impediment.”
The UN DG further prayed that that the Palestinians and Israelis find true peace, reconciliation, and coexistence, fostering a future of mutual respect, prosperity, and harmony.
