The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) says it will provide free healthcare services to residents of Udo Community and neighbouring areas in Edo State through a three-day medical outreach.
The Chief Medical Director of UBTH, Mrs. Idia Ize-Iyamu, disclosed this on Thursday when a hospital delegation visited the Iyase of Udo to seek support and cooperation for the programme.
Represented by the Deputy Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (Clinical Services), Dr. Philip Osho, the CMD said the visit was aimed at securing the blessings and backing of community leaders for the successful implementation of the outreach.
Ize-Iyamu said the programme, scheduled for August 11 to 13 at the Comprehensive Health Centre, Udo, underscored UBTH’s commitment to extending quality healthcare services to underserved communities across Edo State.
According to her, the initiative will promote preventive healthcare through early diagnosis, treatment, health education, and community engagement, with the goal of improving residents’ health outcomes and overall well-being.
She said a multidisciplinary team would provide medical consultations, screening for hypertension, diabetes, eye diseases and other health conditions, as well as dental care, counselling services, and comprehensive health education.
Ize-Iyamu added that essential medicines would be provided where necessary, while patients requiring specialist attention would be referred to UBTH for further evaluation, treatment, and management by qualified experts.
She appealed to the Iyase to mobilise community leaders, youth and women groups, religious organisations, and other stakeholders to ensure widespread participation by residents.
In response, the Iyase of Udo, Chief Patrick Igbinidu, commended the UBTH management for the initiative, describing it as a major development that would greatly enhance healthcare access for residents.
“It is a new dawn for Udo Community. I am pleased to witness this development coming to the area, and I believe the medical outreach will bring hope to our people by improving access to quality healthcare,” he said.
The traditional ruler assured UBTH of the community’s full cooperation and pledged to mobilise residents to take maximum advantage of the free medical services.
