The Tukur-Tukur community in Zaria, Kaduna State has commended the swift and coordinated response of health authorities to a recent resurgence of diphtheria in the area.
In an official statement released on Monday, community leader Abdul-Azeez Suleiman praised the efforts of the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, and both local and state health officials for their proactive measures to contain the disease.
“We are truly impressed with the prompt response and decisive action taken by health authorities,” Suleiman said. “Their commitment to our health and safety has not gone unnoticed.”
According to the statement, the outbreak—which poses a serious threat to public health, especially among children—prompted an immediate mobilization of medical resources. This included the delivery of vaccines and the launch of a house-to-house survey aimed at identifying and managing suspected cases.
The presence of representatives from WHO and UNICEF in the community underscores the gravity of the situation and the importance of international collaboration in addressing such outbreaks.
The community urged all residents to cooperate fully with health workers, participate in vaccination exercises, and remain vigilant for symptoms such as sore throat, fever, and a thick coating in the throat—key indicators of diphtheria.
“It is imperative that every household engages with the health teams and supports the vaccination drive,” the statement read. “This collective effort is vital for the safety and well-being of our people.”
The Tukur-Tukur community reaffirmed its commitment to overcoming the outbreak and thanked health authorities for their continued support.
