The Management of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife, has organized a comprehensive free health screening for its staff as part of activities marking the hospital’s 50th anniversary.
The exercise, held on Wednesday at the hospital’s auditorium in Ile-Ife, Osun State, featured a range of diagnostic tests, including blood pressure checks, blood glucose monitoring, body mass index (BMI) assessment, hepatitis screening, urine analysis, and dental scaling and polishing.
Speaking during the exercise, Prof. Oluyomi Okunola, Consultant Physician and Vice-Chairman of the OAUTHC 50th Anniversary Planning Committee, said the screening formed an essential part of the week-long jubilee celebrations.
Okunola explained that the initiative was based on the management’s belief that a healthy workforce is the backbone of any successful institution.
“As a teaching hospital, we routinely conduct medical outreaches for the community, but many of our staff rarely benefit from such programmes due to their demanding schedules. This time, we are bringing care home to those who dedicate their lives to caring for others,” he said.
He noted that early detection of potential health risks through such screenings enables timely medical intervention and helps prevent avoidable complications.
“We cannot afford to lose any of our staff to preventable illnesses. This initiative ensures that every member of our workforce remains healthy, motivated, and capable of delivering quality healthcare to the public,” Okunola added.
He said the free health screening reflects the hospital’s commitment to staff welfare and aligns with the anniversary theme, which celebrates five decades of excellence in healthcare, training, and community service.
According to him, integrating the screening into the 50th-anniversary activities honors OAUTHC’s legacy of service to the community while reaffirming its responsibility to the wellbeing of its most valuable asset — its staff.
Mr. Kingsley Ogunne of the Corporate Services Department commended the management for prioritizing staff health, describing the gesture as thoughtful and timely, especially given the increasing workload associated with hospital operations.
