Renaissance African Energy Company Limited, in collaboration with the Bayelsa Ministry of Health and Kolmarg Eyesight Foundation, has launched a free medical outreach for hundreds of residents of Ofoni community in Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
The four-day medical mission, which began on Thursday, is being held at the Primary Healthcare Centre in Ofoni.
Hope Nuka, Corporate Relations Manager, Projects and Opportunities at Renaissance Africa Energy, representing Igo Weli, General Manager Relations and Sustainable Development, said the program targets Oil Mining Lease (OML) 35 communities.
“Renaissance and our Joint Venture Partners—NNPC Limited, TotalEnergies, and Agip Energy & Energy Resources (AENR)—recognize that today’s event represents another milestone in our shared commitment to advancing community health and well-being,” Nuka said.
He added that the eye care initiative serves the people of Ofoni, Bolu-Orua, Toru Agiama, Ebedebiri, Toru-Orua, Agalabiri, Iriama, Lalagbene, Ayamasa, Alebiri, and neighboring communities in Bayelsa State.
Dr. Ngoware Torunana, Director of Medical Services at the Bayelsa Ministry of Health, who represented the Commissioner for Health, praised the collaboration between the oil firm and the state government.
“The medical outreach is aimed at improving the health and well-being of the people of Ofoni Community,” he said.
The Iseni Phase 1 project, also known as the Vision First Program, provides a wide range of services, including eye surgeries, eye screenings and consultations, and dispensing of reading glasses. Other services offered include dental care, health education, cardiovascular and laboratory screenings, treatment of chronic and minor illnesses, deworming, and distribution of mosquito-treated nets.
Dr. Malachi Enakaitor, speaking to reporters, said the team comprises healthcare professionals across multiple medical specialties, ensuring quality healthcare reaches the rural community.
Mr. Diepreye Jacob, a beneficiary, shared his experience: “I came to the health centre with my eyes closed and unable to see. The medical team is wonderful. The doctors performed the surgery, and now I can see the world—it’s beautiful!”
Also present were Dr. Williams Appah, Executive Secretary of the Bayelsa State Primary Health Care Board, and traditional rulers from the Ofoni community, who graced the occasion.
