The Akwa Ibom State Government has said it will close down health centers that are using unqualified medical workers.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ekem John, made this announcement on Sunday during a health town hall meeting held in Uyo.
Dr. John explained that the aim is to make sure only trained professionals provide medical care so that people’s health and safety are protected.
He said the state governor, Umo Eno, has ordered the Ministry of Health to strictly apply health rules and stop any illegal practices that can harm the public.
The commissioner also said a special task force has been set up to fight against fake drugs and monitor private hospitals and unqualified medical workers.
As part of changes in the health sector, the government will soon begin the reregistration of all private hospitals, medical labs, and pharmacies in the state.
“Right now in Akwa Ibom, medical quackery is a serious problem,” he said. “Even people like tailors are pretending to be doctors.”
He said the governor has instructed the Ministry of Health to create new rules, and all private hospitals in the state must register again under the new system.
“We will publish the new rules, and hospitals will be given time to follow them,” he added.
Dr. John said this plan will help people trust the health system again and make sure both private and public hospitals follow proper medical ethics.
He also said that in August, the state will open two new oxygen plants at General Hospital Ukpum Abak and Emmanuel General Hospital, Eket, to replace the use of industrial oxygen.
Finally, Dr. John praised the governor for involving key people in the health sector in planning the proposed Ibom International Hospital.
