The Kanawa Pharmaceutical Coordinated Wholesale Centre (KPP-CWC) has confiscated over N1.3 billion worth of substandard drugs and unwholesome food products in Kano State.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday, Superintendent Pharmacist Furera Ado said the operation targeted high-demand products such as antimalarials, antibiotics, and analgesics.
“An analysis of the results shows that 40.3 percent of all pharmaceutical samples tested failed the Active Ingredient Content test, meaning they were substandard,” Ado stated.
She revealed that some of the confiscated drugs have already been handed over to the state’s committee on drug abuse for destruction.
“These products, if left unchecked, would have made their way to the public, leading to treatment failures and potentially costing lives,” she warned.
Ado explained that the entire centre is registered and operated under the supervision of a superintendent pharmacist, in line with regulatory requirements. All professional activities within the centre are monitored accordingly.
She noted that KPP-CWC has made significant progress in identifying and seizing fake, falsified, adulterated, counterfeit, and expired drugs, while also curbing the distribution of illicit pharmaceuticals.
As part of its effort to strengthen operations, Ado announced that KPP will soon commence interviews to recruit additional staff and further reinforce its regulatory functions.
Highlighting technological advancements, Ado disclosed that the centre has acquired a WHO-certified cold room from the United States, supported by a 24-hour solar power system.
The facility is designed to store thermolabile pharmaceutical products that require strict temperature control.
“The cold room maintains a stable temperature between +2 and +8 degrees Celsius, and it can also be reset to sub-zero levels for the storage of vaccines,” she said.
The KPP-CWC is managed by Kanawa Pharmaceutical Partners Limited, a special purpose vehicle registered by the Federal Government under the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria Act 2022 (as amended), to oversee the operations of the centre.
