A Consultant Community Ophthalmologist at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), Dr. Bolarinwa Tota, has advised Nigerians to blink every 20 minutes when using phones, computers, or other digital devices to prevent dry eyes.
Dr. Tota gave the advice in an interview with reporters on Tuesday in Ilorin, warning that prolonged screen time could cause eye dryness and discomfort.
She explained that consciously blinking every 20 minutes for a few seconds helps maintain eye moisture and protects against screen-related issues such as dryness, irritation, and fatigue.
According to her, staring at screens for extended periods can lead to eye strain, headaches, blurry vision, and a gritty sensation in the eyes.
The ophthalmologist emphasized the importance of making a deliberate effort to blink frequently, saying it keeps the eyes’ surface from drying out and enhances focus during screen exposure.
“Blinking not only moisturizes the eyes but also reduces strain, enhances concentration, and provides natural protection from dust and environmental particles,” she said.
In addition to blinking, Tota urged Nigerians to undergo regular eye examinations to detect common eye conditions such as glaucoma and cataracts early.
She noted that early detection is crucial to maintaining long-term eye health and preventing avoidable vision loss.
“About 75 per cent of blindness cases are preventable with early detection. People should prioritize routine eye checkups,” she added.
